  THE GREAT HIGHLAND BAGPIPE.

The bagpipes, in general, have been around for at least 4.000 years and are found, in many formats, throughout the World. They   have evolved from a basic instrument into the current format that is known World wide as

  "The Great Highland Bagpipe".

The   bagpipes are regarded now as the national instrument of Scotland ranking along with the kilt as part of the proud heritage of this country.

Many years ago, the great Clan chiefs would have their own piper and it was a great honour to hold this position.   The personal piper would play at various functions such as wedding but also in competitions against pipers from other clans.   Special music was usually composed when the chief died and this has formed the backbone of the classical music structure called Piobaireachd.

The bagpipes have been used in many conflicts, not only to give moral support to the troops but also to frighten the enemy. It does not take too much imagination to see why the Black Watch, complete with kilts and bagpipes were known as "The Ladies from Hell".

Any function will be enhanced by the playing of the bagpipes, whether it is the lilting sounds of a strathspey at a wedding or the poignant sound of a lament at the final tribute to a loved one.
